Space the final frontier. Now comes the time for a new voyage to unite us all and explore strange new worlds. This is my project for the first human habitat on the planet Mars. The main purpose was to design a realistic model of a potential human research facility which will shelter a group of 6 astronauts on their 550-days mission to explore the Red Planet. The structure is a modular system of hexagonal prisms designed to fit into the cargo compartment of SpaceX's Falcon Heavy rocket. They bind together on the surface of Mars to form a bigger interior space which provides psychological comfort for living and work. Inspired by the nature of honeycombs the habitat consists of 6 functional zones Methane zone, Accommodation zone, Research zone, Transform zone, Illumination zone, Aquaponics zone and Nutrient zone. Each zone can be safely isolated from the others in case of emergency by an air-lock. The design uses only tested technologies and materials to ensure the reliability and cost-effectiveness of the project. The four major factors for such a mission - water, air, food and power, are all sustained by a high tech redundant HVAC recycling system and Aquaponics vertical farming. The energy sources are automatic solar panels on the roofs of the modules and a fourth-generation molten salt reactor. In that way, the habitat is almost independent from Earth supplies. The construction of each module consists of a skeleton of aluminum alloy bearing elements and enclosing multi-layer panels that aim to protect the interior from the dangers and impacts from the surrounding environment by creating an airtight space. Each module has a double floor and suspended ceiling where all installations are hidden, so they remain easily accessible, while the walls are free to accommodate the equipment. Now the mission seems possible!
