One of the largest barriers to human expansion into the solar system is the need for exclusive specialisation in the infrastructure that would take us there. This proposal challenges that; the same structures should be utilised in multiple environments. The intention is to both adapt to the conditions of planet other than Earth, and to provide conditions suitable for human life during the journey to such a planet. This is achieved through a system of modules which can function independently, or together to form complex space vessels and surface bases. They can cohere into a ring, or “carousel”, which can be spun to provide a simulation of gravity. This approach would allow flexible and rapid exploration of space, and of extra-terrestrial bodies.
